{"id":807,"date":"2020-03-26T22:18:01","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T22:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/report.humanrightspolicy.us\/?p=807"},"modified":"2020-03-26T22:18:04","modified_gmt":"2020-03-26T22:18:04","slug":"moving-forward-requires-confronting-slaverys-racist-legacy-un-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/report.humanrightspolicy.us\/?p=807","title":{"rendered":"Moving forward requires confronting slavery\u2019s \u2018racist legacy\u2019: UN chief"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In his message for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/slaveryremembranceday\/2020\/events.shtml\">the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade<\/a>, observed on Wednesday, the UN Secretary-General called for the dismantling of racist structures and institutions so that the world can move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRacism is the reason why outside Africa, people of African descent are often among the last in line for health care, education, justice and opportunities of all kinds\u201d, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2020-03-25\/secretary-generals-message-the-international-day-of-remembrance-of-the-victims-of-slavery-and-the-transatlantic-slave-trade-scroll-down-for-french-version\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to raise our voices against all expressions of racism and instances of racist behaviour. We urgently need to dismantle racist structures and reform racist institutions. We can only move forward by confronting the racist legacy of slavery together\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Stolen futures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The international day pays tribute to the millions of Africans forcibly removed from their homelands over a 400-year period, starting in 1501.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s theme focuses on racism, which Mr. Guterres said continues to play \u201ca strong role\u201d in the world today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter alignright wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fitvids-video\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The transatlantic slave trade is one of the biggest crimes in the history of humankind.<br><br>And we continue to live in its shadow.<br><br>We can only move forward by confronting the racist legacy of slavery together.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xkUVH9zdoe\">https:\/\/t.co\/xkUVH9zdoe<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ant\u00f3nio Guterres (@antonioguterres) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/1242798694547755009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly President urged countries to commit to stamp out racism and racial discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe transatlantic slave trade seeded deep inequalities within societies. Economies prospered at a great human cost: entire industries were built upon the suffering of fellow human beings\u201d, said the top Nigerian diplomat and academic, Tijanii Muhammad-Bande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSlavery ended many lives and stole the future of successive generations. The descendants of those who were enslaved continue to face enduring social and economic inequality, intolerance, prejudice, racism, and discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>End modern slavery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The General Assembly unites all 193 UN Member States, and Mr. Muhammad-Bande called for countries to recognize the contribution made by people of African descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further called for action to end slavery now in the modern era, whose victims number some 40 million people worldwide, mainly women and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe onus is upon every Member State to eradicate trafficking, forced labour, servitude and slavery. None of us will be truly free whilst these people suffer\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe simply cannot be indifferent to injustice. It is incumbent upon each of us to uphold the human rights of everyone, everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>COVID-19 and compassion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade has been celebrated annually on 25 March since 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A commemorative ceremony, exhibition and other events are normally held at UN Headquarters in New York but were cancelled this year due to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Muhammad-Bande regretted that the ceremony had to be postponed, adding \u201cthe COVID-19 pandemic reinforces the fact that we have a duty to open our minds to the lived experiences of
