We stand ready to provide life-saving support. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Goni?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Goni<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4ZgYDl5Pwi\">pic.twitter.com\/4ZgYDl5Pwi<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Oyun Dendevnorov (@OyunUNICEF) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OyunUNICEF\/status\/1323151188842344448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 2, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/philippines\/stories\/over-700000-children-among-most-affected-super-typhoon-rollygoni-hit-philippines\">According<\/a>&nbsp;to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OCHA<\/a>), around 68.6 million people are affected, with 24.3 million living in the worst-hit areas. Of the 2.3 million vulnerable people living in the most affected areas, an estimated 724,000 are children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Significant flooding and damage to infrastructure are being reported. According to initial reports, 10 people have lost their lives, including a five-year-old child, due to drowning and falling debris.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gustavo Gonzalez, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the Philippines,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/asia-pacific\/card\/32wYeZCYiw\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;that relief workers have not waited&nbsp;for the landfall to mobilize teams and take action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUN agencies and humanitarian NGOs are already working with relevant Government departments and offices, Philippine Red Cross, and with private sector groups to coordinate our efforts to support the conduct of rapid needs assessments and swiftly assist the most vulnerable people caught in the typhoon\u2019s destructive path,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>\u2018Prepare for the worst\u2019&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Gonzalez also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reports.unocha.org\/en\/country\/asia-pacific\/card\/32wYeZCYiw\/\">called on everyone<\/a>&nbsp;to follow the guidance being given by the authorities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe people of the Philippines are incredibly resilient, but this is a very dangerous typhoon \u2026 we must prepare for the worst and be ready to save lives,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the next hours and days we must do everything in our power to save lives and ensure that no-one is left behind,\u201d added the UN official.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>UN response&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UN agencies, for their part, are responding and supporting national efforts.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OCHA<\/a>&nbsp;is coordinating humanitarian sectors and is mapping humanitarian and development partners in affected areas to support impact assessments. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UN International Organization for Migration (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IOM<\/a>) is supporting Philippine authorities in the management of evacuation centres, while the UN World Food Programme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WFP<\/a>) has received a request for logistical support to food distributions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UN Children\u2019s Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNICEF<\/a>) has pre-positioned emergency supplies for families and stands ready to provide life-saving support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChildren are among the most vulnerable in any emergency. [We are] closely monitoring the situation and [are] deeply concerned for the survival, development and protection of children at risk,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/philippines\/stories\/over-700000-children-among-most-affected-super-typhoon-rollygoni-hit-philippines\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the UN agency, adding that it can \u201cquickly mobilize partners and suppliers to augment Government supply if needed.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National actors too have mobilized to assess the situation as well as supporting authorities in
