Take Reparations: Human rights allow more action than asking
Black Summer: The Path to Independence and Reparations
Reparations are not a plea for charity but a fundamental human right. According to the Basic Principles and Guidelines on the Right to a Remedy and Reparation for Victims of Gross Violations of International Human Rights Law and Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law, the core element of reparations is the restoration of victims to their original condition. For African Americans (Afrodescendants), that original condition is sovereignty, which can now be regained through the assertion of the right to self-determination.
The Afrodescendant Union, an organization advocating for the political and economic empowerment of Afrodescendants, is calling on Black Americans to take reparations into their own hands. By asserting the right of self-determination within the United States, Afrodescendants can establish control over the assets of their territories and leverage them for financial resources. This would allow them to fund monetary reparations payments directly, rather than waiting on a government that has ignored their demands for generations.
“Black people have spent decades, even centuries, appealing to an inherently racist and unfair government. It is time that Black organizations and activists stop beating around the bush,” said Human Rights Policy Officer Ramzu Yunus, chairman of the Afrodescendant Union. “Reparation is a right and can be easily attained if we go on the offensive and simply assert our right of self-determination. Then we have the power and assets to distribute monetary reparations and the justice that has been sought by Black people for centuries.”
On July 4, 2025, the Afrodescendant Union is organizing a nationwide action called Black Summer. Afrodescendants in cities across America are called upon to take a stand, asserting their right to self-determination and declaring independence. This strategic move will grant them political control over cities or areas where they are the majority, allowing them to govern and allocate resources for their own economic advancement, including reparations. Though encouraged nationwide, the main place of action will be in Detroit, Michigan at the city-county building on 2 Woodward Avenue beginning at 9am EST.
Actions planned for July 4, 2025, as part of Black Summer include:
- Declaration of self-determination in Afrodescendant-majority areas
- Mass gatherings and demonstrations in major cities
- Establishment of local governing structures to manage resources and assets
- Strategic economic planning for wealth redistribution and reparations payments
Rather than continuing to appeal to a system designed to maintain inequality, the Afrodescendant Union believes this direct action approach is the only guaranteed way to achieve reparations and sovereignty.
